Periodontal Charting Methods Window

The Periodontal Charting Methods window allows you to manage charting methods. The Charting Method Setup window is then used to specify the order for the method.

A text field that describes the charting method.
Task Procedure
Add Charting Methods
  1. Click the Clear Data () icon.
  2. Complete the fields as necessary and click the Add a new Record () icon.
Configure Charting Methods
  1. Select a listed entry.
  2. Click the Charting Method Setup () icon to display the Periodontal Charting Methods window.
  3. Make any necessary changes and close the window.
Edit Charting Method Description
  1. Select a listed entry.
  2. Make any necessary changes and click the Modify Record () icon.
Delete Charting Methods
  1. Select a listed entry and click the Delete Record () icon.
  2. When prompted, click Yes to confirm the deletion.

Charting Method Setup Window

(Maintenance > Perio > Charting Methods)

The Charting Method Setup window allows you to specify the behavior of the charting method. It displays when you open the Periodontal Charting Methods window, select a listed method and click the Charting Method Setup () icon.

A perio charting method indicates the order and direction in which a perio exam progresses through a patient’s mouth.

Depending on the condition, teeth are charted on one or two sides (buccal / facial and lingual), and each side can have up to three sites / surfaces. For more information on conditions, see Perio Conditions.

The order in which each tooth / side combination is charted is also configured.

Example: A method may begin with #1 buccal / facial, then move to #1 lingual or #2 buccal / facial.

The direction within the tooth / side combination – right to left or left to right must be specified.

Charting Method

A disabled field that indicates the selected charting method.
Chart Direction within cell

A set of radio buttons that indicates the direction to chart a condition on a single tooth:

  • Left to Right

  • Right to Left

Clear All

A button that clears all entries for the charting method.
Task Procedure
Configure Charting Methods

Each of the 64 squares (two per tooth) are stamped in the order that the perio exam progresses in the method. Additionally, the selected Chart Direction within cell radio button is recorded on each square.

  1. Click the Clear All button to clear the current configuration.

  2. Review the Chart Direction within cell radio button and modify if necessary.

  3. Click in a blank square to indicate that position as the next tooth / surface to be charted in this method.

  4. Repeat Steps 2-3 for all squares.

    5. Note: The Chart Direction within cell field only needs to be changed if the charting direction changes at some point during the charting order.

Example Setup:

Tooth #1-16 (Facial): Upper right posterior on the buccal / facial side to upper left posterior on the buccal / facial side.

  1. Set the Chart Direction within cell to Left to Right.

  2. Click the cell that represents the facial side of tooth 1.

  3. Repeat for teeth 2 through 16.

Tooth #16-1 (Lingual): Upper left posterior on the lingual side to upper right posterior on the lingual side.

  1. Set the Chart Direction within cell to Right to Left.

  2. Click the cell that represents the lingual side of tooth 16.

  3. Repeat for tooth 15 and back towards tooth 1.

Tooth #32-17 (Facial): Lower right posterior on the buccal / facial side to lower left posterior on the buccal / facial side.

  1. Set the Chart Direction within cell to Left to Right.

  2. Click the cell that represents the facial side of tooth 32.

  3. Repeat for teeth 31 to 17.

Tooth #17-32 (Lingual): Lower left posterior on lingual side to lower right posterior on lingual side.

  1. Set the Chart Direction within cell to Right to Left.

  2. Click the cell that represents the lingual side of tooth 17.

  3. Repeat for tooth 18 back towards tooth 32.
