Work with Payment Plans

The Pmt Plan tab allows you to view, add, and manage all payment plans associated with the selected patient or their guarantor(s).

Payment plans are used in axiUm to allow a patient to pay for one or more charges over the course of multiple payment periods. This allows the patient to pay in smaller portions over an agreed upon time period. A plan can be created for planned, in process, or completed work.

There are two main types of payment plans:

  • Specific Charges: This plan type is used to pay for specific procedures or office charges over a set amount of time. These may be planned work or a combination of treatments with outstanding balances and work planned for the future.
  • Important: This is the most flexible and versatile payment plan that axiUm offers. Aside from using an Orthodontics plan for orthodontics treatment, we recommend using a Specific Charges payment plan to best meet your needs.

  • Orthodontics: This plan type is for current and/or future orthodontic work. Like a Specific Charges plan, it applies to specific treatments. It differs from the Specific Charges plan in that it can be used for both patient and insurance portions and it generates insurance claim submissions each time a payment comes due if the patient has insurance for the treatments applied to the plan. It also requires you to frequently run ortho billings in the Ortho Billing window to generate the claims and create the fees that are currently due.
  • Important: Ortho payment plans can be complex. When creating an ortho payment plan, your workflow may differ depending on whether the payor has insurance coverage, dual coverage, or no coverage.

Note: While an Outstanding Balance plan type is also available, we do not recommend its use and encourage you to use Specific Charges plans instead.

Payment plans can be set up to follow a regular or manual payment schedule.

  • Regular payment schedules are configured during the initial payment plan creation and may be modified after the fact, when necessary.
  • Manual payment schedules are set up after the plan is created and allow you to add all necessary manual payments.

Note: Manual payment schedules give you more freedom to manage payment periods. They are more commonly used for ortho plans and payors who make sporadic payments or pay varying amounts at each scheduled pay period.

Records may display in different colored text based on their status in the Pmt Plan tab:

  • Gray: Indicates that the record is deleted.
